Are you still chasing after the ice waterfall in the water curtain cave of Boguyan scenic spot of the Siming Mountain? In fact, there are many other wonders of ice waterfalls in the mountains and fields of Ningbo, like the Shuimen Waterfall located in Qingyun Steps Scenic Area of Longguan Township, Haishu District. “It is the third largest ice waterfall viewing place in Ningbo, only next to the Boguyan waterfall and the Three-folded Waterfall of the Licun Village,” said Lin Hailun, an observer who has been dedicated to the changes in the local environment and the distribution changes of animals and plants in Ningbo for the past 30 years.

Lin Hailun came to the Shuimen Waterfall on February 9. “When I arrived at the Guanding Lake Reservoir Dam around 10am, many hikers had already finished watching the ice waterfall and were going down the mountain. It shows that the ice waterfall scene of the Shuimen Waterfall has already become popular with tourists.”

Along the way from Qingyun Steps to the Shuimen Waterfall, there is a stream of water gushing out. When the temperature is below 0℃, with the blowing of the cold north wind, the water splashing onto the surrounding branches, leaves and railings may form various shapes of ice droplets, very unique and appealing.

On the way to the Shuimen Waterfall, one must pass through the Tianmen Waterfall. Although it is higher in altitude than the Shuimen Waterfall, the Tianmen Waterfall is not an ice waterfall.

The Shuimen Waterfall has a drop of about 80 meters, but the water flow is not very large. Many people think that large water currents may result in ice waterfalls, but in fact, this is not the case. The water flow may be too large to cool down and freeze into ice. A fine water flow is more suitable for the development and growth of ice waterfalls, especially with the continuous assistance of cold air and north wind, when large areas of ice waterfalls may be present on cliffs. The formation of the ice waterfall landscape fully demonstrates the principle of “haste leading to a waste”.

At the same time, although low temperatures are essential to the formation of ice waterfalls, when the temperature continues to decline, the entire stream may be completely frozen and cut off. With the strong cold air this time, the water pool under the Shuimen Waterfall has formed a thick layer of ice, and despite the sunlight during the day, there is no sign of ice melting.

However, based on his years of experience in the wilderness, Lin Hailun said that as the temperature gradually rises, there is a possibility of ice melting and falling off at any time. Therefore, for security reasons, people should not stand under ice while watching the ice waterfall.
